Overly Restrictive Name Check and Fix Incoming (October 27)

Blizzard community manager Kaivax posted on the forums on Oct 27, 18:28 PDT (Oct 28, 01:28 UTC) about a bug in the character name check. Early Name Reservation had already opened in Europe, the Americas, Korea and Taiwan.

What this means for players

  • Some names rejected with "That name is restricted" during character creation were blocked by this bug. Blizzard's example is any name containing the letters c-o-n.
  • The fix goes in with the next realm restart in each region. The post does not give restart times. After the restart, try creating a character with that name again.
  • The "That name contains mature language" message comes from a different check and is not part of this fix. Names that are meant to be restricted, such as major Warcraft lore characters, stay blocked after the fix.

Announcement

In WoW Forever, we’ve been working on the restricted name list, which is a list the game uses to check for non-profane names that we wish to restrict, such as major Warcraft lore characters or names that are blocked for technical reasons.

Today we’ve determined that we have a bug in the process that caused the game to be overly restrictive with some names. For example, it has been incorrectly restricting names containing “c-o-n”.

With the next realm restarts in each region, we’re going to implement the fix. Afterward, if you previously received a message that said “That name is restricted” for a name that you think should have been allowed, please feel free to try again.

Thank you!
