The sword-wielding mage — turning Blade of Silverlaine into the mage-only Coldflame Saber

Use the mage-only Scroll of the Saber on Blade of Silverlaine, dropped by Baron Silverlaine in Shadowfang Keep, and it becomes the Coldflame Saber (Imbue Blade) — a sword that adds Fire damage when you hit Frozen targets in melee.

How to get it

• Turn in books at the Stormwind or Undercity library. Mages learn the new skill Comprehension and the spell Study.
• Cast Study inside a library: 1 Light Feather gives a Bundle of Scrolls, on a 1-hour cooldown.
• Decipher untranslated scrolls with Comprehend Scroll to get various spell scrolls. Scroll of the Saber is one of them and rare — one player needed 119 deciphered scrolls.
• Get Blade of Silverlaine (requires level 21) in Shadowfang Keep and use the scroll on it.

Why it matters

Freeze a target with Frost Nova or Frostbite and every swing adds 98 Fire damage — a big number for a level 21 weapon — while +32 spell power keeps your spells strong. Whether Fingers of Frost, which treats your next spells as Frozen, also counts for melee is not confirmed yet. Plan the Frost side in the mage talent calculator.

Books pay off for every class

Friend of the Library (10 books) offers a neck — Scholarly Pendant or Erudite's Amulet. Greater Friend of the Library (20 books) offers a ring — Field Researcher's Loop or Philanthropist's Ring. On the beta, Comprehension has been reported to vanish after relogging.
